RENAME THE BRIDGE - THERE ARE SOME THINGS THAT ARE JUST THE RIGHT THING TO DO.

I know some of my friends may disagree, but there are some things that are right to do. This is not about "the moment". This is about reminding future generations about the giants on whose shoulders we stand in attempting to achieve the "more perfect Union".

When we identify permanent structures that will outlive their namesakes, consideration has to be given for the legacy of the namesake themselves.

John Lewis was one of the youngest and earliest of the Civil Rights leaders of the 60's for a movement all of us SHOULD agree was the right thing to do. Fiercely non-violent and focused on what our constitution and mission of the country espoused that "all [men] are created equal.

He worked with both sides of the aisle in Congress to advance human rights.

Edmund Pettus was a Grand Dragon of the Ku Klux Klan. He was a traitor to the Union in leading as a Brigadier General in the Civil War. As a General in the Spanish-American war he participated in ethnic cleansing of Native Americans in California.

He was elected Senator from Alabama by the State Senate (how it was done then) AS A KLAN MEMBER. He never disavowed his pro-slavery belief.

If you had to explain to your child WHY a bridge was named after one of these two men, how would you explain it's current name vs. John Lewis.

Regardless whether you are black or white and whether you are right or left, you must admit that naming a bridge after someone so reprehensible is an embarrassment to what we should stand for as AMERICANS!!!!

This is NOT about cancel culture, THIS NEEDS TO HAPPEN NOW AND IS THE RIGHT THING TO DO.
